“Was the Matrix Trilogy the Conclusion of the Grail Tale”: An Objective Assessment
I have reached the conclusion, after having carefully gone through the materials available to me on the Grail Tale (i.e. the DVC Book and Movie) as well as after having watched the Matrix Trilogy, that the Matrix Trilogy was nothing but the conclusion of the Grail Tale, where in the end, Neo, the saviour, as prophesised, saves his people.
You may not want to believe me and you have the right to do so. Captain Morpheus always believed Neo to be the One and he believed that he would deliver them peace. In the second part of the Trilogy, Captain Lock mentions to Morpheus, “…Morpheus, not everyone believes what you believe” and to which Morpheus says, “…My belief does not require them to”. Similarly, my belief in my conclusion does not require the reader to believe in the same.
Neo, The Saviour
I think there is enough material on the internet to prove that Neo was none other than Jesus Christ, the Saviour. An interesting article from http://www.eternalministries.org/ titled “Matrix – A Review” mentions,
“Neo is the main character of the movie who mimics the true Saviour by having both a death and resurrection. After his resurrection, the matrix (sin) no longer has dominion over him. Death and sin had no power over Christ. As Christ died for mankind, Neo dies to save the world. At the end, Neo determines to show the world the truth, just as Christ said He is the truth. Neo destroys Agent Smith and Christ destroyed evil. The world is set free from the bondage of the matrix, and Christ frees those who believe in Him from the bondage of sin.”
In the third part of the Trilogy, Matrix Revolutions, when Neo destroys Smith, he lies on the floor with his arms stretched out wide, very similar to the manner in which Jesus Christ was when he was crucified. Interestingly, at the very beginning of the first part of Matrix Trilogy, Neo presents a CD to a guy who thanks him by saying, “…Halleluiah, you are my saviour man, my own personal Jesus Christ.”
The Underground City of Zion
What is the Matrix? Morpheus in several of his discourses to Neo has described the Matrix. He says, “…The Matrix is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth…” and “…The Matrix is a neural interactive simulation…. A computer generated world to keep us under control…” The people that have been freed from the Matrix, take refuge in the Underground city of Zion. They know about the coming of The One, their saviour, who would end the war and free them all. Morpheus further believes that One is Neo. (Interestingly, when you interchange the letters of “One” you get “Neo”.)
The Da Vinci Code talks about the Priory of Sion, a group of people, who are aware of the bloodline of Christ. This Priory is very secretive of the identity of their members and always stays hidden from the eyes of the common public. Thus, just like the city of Zion, they are in a metaphorical sense, “Underground”.
The Agents
Morpheus warns Neo by saying that, “…All the people who are not part of Zion, are our enemies…The system is our enemy and the people that are part of the system, are also our enemies”. In the Matrix, the Agents want to kill Neo and destroy any hopes of the people of Zion of becoming free. In DVC, the monks of Opus Dei (particularly) are out to destroy any traces that would lead to revealing the descendants of Christ.
Teabing never finds out that Sophie Neveu was the current descendent of Christ, otherwise he surely would have wanted to kill her. Just to add here, when Neo meets the Oracle for the first time, she says to him, “…You have the gift, but you are waiting for something, a next life maybe….these things work like this.” Probably, Sophie Neveu, after some more lives, would be re-born as Neo.
Neo, A Human Being
In the Matrix, Neo, (who is none other than the Jesus Christ, as discussed earlier) is said to be human being. The Agents when they are out to kill Neo say, “…It’s him… the anomaly…but he is only human.” Even when Neo meets the architect in his room, the architect says, “….you have many questions, and though the process has altered your consciousness, you remain irrevocably human” The DVC also talks about the Priory who know that Jesus was a human being and that he had a blood-line.
The Merovingian
In the Matrix, there is a French character by the name Merovingian. This Merovingian is shown to be extremely rich and powerful, as powerful as a king would be. The DVC talks of the French Royal Family, the Merovingians.
Also, in the second part of the Matrix Trilogy, Matrix Reloaded, Persephone (the companion of the Merovingian) asks Neo to kiss her. She says she wants him to kiss her so she can feel what it is like again to be kissed by something close to human, just like the Merovingian used to be. Then she says to Trinity that she envies her, but that these things are not meant to last. Also, the DVC tells us that, “…Christ's line grew quietly under cover in France until making a bold move in the fifth century, when it intermarried with French royal blood and created a lineage known as the Merovingian bloodline.” All that means is that, The Merovingian used to be just like Neo, an earlier One, i.e. an earlier descendant of Jesus Christ.
The Father and the Mother of the Matrix
In the second part of the trilogy, when Neo meets the Architect, the Architect calls him as “…the eventuality of an anomaly.” He also tells him that, “…The first matrix I designed was flawless, perfect, a work of art sublime, and a triumph equalled only by its monumental failure…. I have since come to understand that the answer eluded me because it required a mind less bound by the parameters of perfection. Thus the answer was stumbled upon by another intuitive programme initially created to investigate into certain aspects of the human psyche. If I am the father of the Matrix, then she would undoubtedly be its Mother.” To that Neo says, “…is she the Oracle?” and the Architect only replies by saying, “Please!” The Architect continues by saying, “She stumbled upon a solution whereby nearly 99% of all test subjects accepted the programme as long as they were given a choice, even if they were only aware of the choice at the unconscious level. While this functioned, it was obviously fundamentally flawed thus creating the otherwise contradictory systemic anomaly, that if left unchecked, might threaten the system itself. Ergo, those who refused the programme would constitute an escalating probability” and to which Neo says, “…this is about Zion.”
The above paragraph is very difficult to understand in totality so let’s try to understand it in parts. Firstly, we understand that Neo is an anomaly, i.e. an irregularity i.e. something, that, in the normal circumstance, should not have been there. Thus, if Jesus was not human, then there would be no question of him having a blood line and descendents. His descendents would be nothing but an anomaly.
Secondly, the Architect talks about “those who refused the programme” to which Neo refers to as the people in the City of Zion. The people in Zion know about Neo, the saviour, who is a human being, and have not accepted the Matrix programme. The Priory of Sion, also know about the descendents of Jesus Christ, and have not accepted the generally accepted principle of Jesus not being human, as they know about his descendents and bloodline.
Thirdly, the Architect talks of the Mother of the Matrix. Who could this be? She has to be about his age and equally powerful. Neo thought she was the Oracle, but the Architect did not agree to that. I think the Mother of the Matrix is none other than the lady who heads the Council in Zion. She is as old as the Architect and also very powerful. She is also the feminine half who does not have any power over the Matrix currently, and has to remain ‘underground’ in Zion, well protected by the army of the commanders and captains. The DVC also talks about the feminine half not having any power and forced to hide, and be protected by the Members of the Priory and the army of Templar Knights.
The Conclusion
To conclude, The Matrix has many similarities with the DVC which cannot be coincidental, like (1) Neo being human and a descendent of Jesus Christ, (2) The City of Zion who knows about One, their saviour, (3) The feminine half who is currently in hiding in Zion and protected by the commanders and captains, (4) The Agents out to kill Neo, (5) The Merovingian, rich and powerful, and also an earlier descendent of Jesus.
The Matrix captured in its broader story, the facts mentioned in the DVC, and took it to the finality where Neo saves the people of Zion and ends the war. But the public outrage only came for DVC where certain aspects were presented very directly and openly, and not for The Matrix, which presents these same aspects in a more metaphorical manner.
Only the Wachowski Brothers, who have written and produced the Trilogy, can have the final word on this one. So Andy and Larry, if you ever read this, would like to know whether I have come close to completely understanding your Matrix!
Hopefully by the end of this essay, I have succeeded in proving my conclusion to all readers. In that case, you can express the same words that Oracle said to Neo, “…Neo, you have made a believer out of me.”
